₦80.2b fraud: EFCC challenges Yahaya Bello’s move to travel abroad for treatment

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opposed an application by former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, seeking to travel abroad for medical treatment.

Bello’s counsel, J.B. Daudu, argued before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, that his client needed urgent medical attention not available in Nigeria. He cited a medical report and letter from a cardiologist, saying Bello had not travelled in over eight years.

“The core issue is whether the defendant constitutes a flight risk,” Daudu told the court.

However, EFCC counsel, Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), described the application as “an abuse of court process.” He argued it was defective, questioned the medical report’s credibility, and cited the red notice on Bello.

“He says he has low potassium; bananas and pawpaw will handle that,” Pinheiro said.

Justice Nwite adjourned the case to July 3 and 4, and will rule on the application July 21.
