An 18-year-old swimmer died after falling unconscious while swimming at Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland, the National Park Service (NPS) confirmed on Saturday.
The teen and another swimmer got into trouble on Thursday about 150 yards from the lifeguarded area of the beach, according to an NPS statement. A relative alerted lifeguards, who rescued one of the swimmers and retrieved the unconscious 18-year-old from the water.
Emergency responders performed CPR before transporting the teen to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity and that of the other swimmer were not disclosed.
The NPS said it was unclear if the teen drowned or experienced a medical issue while swimming.
“We ask our visitors to never venture too far from shore and pay attention to wind and currents which can transport you long distances quickly,” the agency advised.
Assateague Island spans parts of Maryland and Virginia and is a popular destination for beachgoers.
