The incident happened when their truck hit a landmine, killing 26 soldiers on the spot. Twenty other soldiers were equally wounded and have been taken to the 7 Division, Nigerian Army Hospital for treatment.
At least 26 Nigerian soldiers were killed and 20 others wounded on Tuesday when their truck hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in Borno State, military sources told SaharaReporters. The blast occurred as troops traveled from Damboa to Maiduguri, with casualties rushed to the 7 Division Army Hospital. Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) later claimed responsibility for the attack via Telegram.
The incident comes amid heightened violence in Nigeria’s northeast, where insurgents have intensified attacks. Borno Governor Babagana Zulum recently warned that Boko Haram and ISWAP are regrouping in strategic locations. The military has yet to officially confirm the attack, but sources say it coincided with a handover ceremony between senior commanders in the region.
