The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk brought 30,000 people to New York to honor firefighter Stephen Siller and raise millions for veterans and families of fallen first responders.
About 30,000 runners retraced the path of fallen FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller on Sunday in New York City’s Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk, raising millions for families of fallen first responders and injured veterans.
Siller, who ran from Red Hook through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001, inspired the annual event. The foundation has already raised more than $2.4 million this year, with fundraising continuing in the weeks ahead.
“This event is the cornerstone of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation,” said Frank Siller, the group’s chairman. “Each year, people from around the country and the world come to New York to help us fulfill our mission to NEVER FORGET.”
Participants included firefighters, police officers, military personnel, West Point cadets, and teams like the “Muldowney Moondogs,” who raised a record $135,000 in honor of FDNY firefighter Ritchie Muldowney, who died on 9/11.
Proceeds fund free homes for families of fallen first responders and “smart homes” for catastrophically injured veterans.
