Forty-four federal lawmakers have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to discontinue the prosecution of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu and initiate a national dialogue aimed at reconciliation and addressing political grievances.
A group of 44 federal lawmakers, operating under the banner of “Concerned Federal Lawmakers,” has urged President Bola Tinubu to use his constitutional powers to release Nnamdi Kanu from detention and discontinue his prosecution. In a letter and resolution, they requested that the Attorney-General of the Federation act “as soon as practicable” to halt legal proceedings against Kanu, citing domestic court rulings and international decisions supporting his release.
The lawmakers emphasized the need for a political settlement to resolve underlying grievances and ongoing security challenges, particularly in the southeast.
They wrote, “Driven by the abiding and urgent need for national reconciliation and healing…we hereby respectfully and earnestly request our dear President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as follows: To, as soon as practicable, direct the Attorney-General of the Federation to exercise his constitutional powers and discontinue the prosecution of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; and To, pursuant to the discontinuance of the prosecution, initiate a constructive dialogue, aimed at seeking a just political solution of the matter.”
