A 450kg WWII-era US bomb found in Hong Kong forced the evacuation of 6,000 people before it was safely defused.

Thousands of Hong Kong residents were evacuated after construction workers unearthed a 450kg US-made bomb from World War II in a busy district.

Police official Andy Chan Tin-Chu confirmed the device dated back to the conflict and carried “exceptionally high risks” during disposal. About 1,900 households, totaling 6,000 people, were urged to leave swiftly. The bomb, measuring 1.5 meters, was safely deactivated on Saturday morning with no injuries reported.

The city, once occupied by Japanese forces, was frequently targeted by Allied air raids. Such discoveries remain occasional but serious reminders of the war’s legacy.
