Doctors said Kingsley had died before he was brought in, and the policemen vanished, claiming they went to ‘pump their tyre.’
The family of 92-year-old Festus Arhagba is demanding justice after his son, Kingsley, 50, reportedly died in police custody at the Ajeromi Division, Lagos.
Recounting the ordeal to *Saturday Vanguard*, the frail nonagenarian battling paralysis described the incident as a nightmare filled with “deception, cruelty and extortion.”
“He had gone to drop his children at school when the policemen, five in number, handcuffed him in the presence of my grandchildren and whisked him away,” Arhagba said.
According to him, the family was later asked to produce a “level 12” officer for bail or house documents as collateral. But before the documents could be delivered, Kingsley had collapsed and was declared dead at the hospital.
The tragedy is linked to a disputed building on Salami Street, Ajeromi, which the EFCC recently seized after tracing it to N89 million fraudulently obtained from Sterling Bank.
Kenneth, Festus’s younger son, alleged he was falsely accused of kidnapping and held incommunicado before being released following Kingsley’s death.
Now, the Arhagba family has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, demanding prosecution of those involved.
“The police have killed one of my children,” Festus sobbed, while police sources claimed Kingsley collapsed naturally and was not tortured.
