London mum gives birth using donated sister’s womb

A “miracle” baby girl has become the first child in the UK to be born to a mother using a donated womb.

A 36-year-old British woman has become the UK’s first to give birth using a donated womb, calling her daughter a “little miracle.” Grace Davidson, born without a functioning uterus, received her sister’s womb in 2023 – the UK’s first successful transplant.

Baby Amy, named after the donor aunt, was born in February weighing 2kg. “It was incredible… we’d never let ourselves imagine this,” Grace told the BBC. The north London couple, originally from Scotland, hope for a second child using the transplanted womb.

The surgical team has since performed three more transplants using deceased donors as part of a 15-case trial. Professor Richard Smith, who led the operation, called it “a landmark moment for UK medicine.”
