Amnesty International warned that the ongoing violence was creating a looming humanitarian disaster, as entire communities were being uprooted and livelihoods destroyed.
Amnesty International has raised the alarm over escalating violence in northern Nigeria, reporting at least 71 deaths and over 50 abductions in one week. The rights group detailed attacks in Plateau (52 killed), Kebbi (13), and Katsina (6), where gunmen also kidnapped more than 50 people. The organisation warned of a looming humanitarian crisis, with villagers displaced and livelihoods destroyed.
Criticising the government’s response, Amnesty stated, “Repeated claims of troop deployments have yet to stop the killings.” It urged urgent action to halt violence, ensure justice, and provide aid. The latest attacks follow months of unrest, including Plateau’s Christmas 2023 massacre and a May 2024 Wase assault that left 40 dead.
