The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump can legally terminate more than 16,000 federal employees who were serving in probationary roles during his administration. The decision, handed down on Monday, affirms broad executive authority over the federal workforce, particularly during initial employment periods.
In the 6-3 decision, the justices agreed that the president holds the constitutional power to remove executive officials without restrictions while they are still within their probationary period. “The president holds the constitutional power to remove executive officials during their probationary period,” the court’s opinion read.
The ruling is seen as a major victory for Trump and could set a precedent allowing future administrations greater leeway in reshaping the federal bureaucracy. Critics, however, fear it could open the door to politicized hiring and firing.
