According to the law, violators risk having their vehicle impounded, facing three months imprisonment, or being sentenced to six months of community service, depending on the severity and judicial outcome.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned motorists that eating, drinking, or smoking while driving could lead to three months’ imprisonment or six months of community service. In a Wednesday post on its official X handle, the agency cited the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law (2018), which prohibits distracted driving to enhance road safety.
LASTMA stated: “Smoking, drinking and eating while driving is an offence,” adding that offenders risk vehicle impoundment alongside jail time or community service. The law aims to curb accidents caused by divided attention, reinforcing stricter penalties for traffic violations in Nigeria’s busiest city.
