Twenty-two states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) face the flooding challenge this week, according to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET’s) latest rainfall forecast.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a fresh flood alert for 22 states and Abuja following heavy downpours, warning of potential displacement, infrastructure damage, and disease outbreak.

In its July 9 forecast, NiMET predicted flash floods in Lagos, Edo, Anambra, Bayelsa, and 18 other states due to moderate-heavy rainfall, urging governments to prepare for emergencies. The agency also cautioned about soil erosion, thunderstorms, and strong winds in vulnerable areas.

The alert comes as many states, including Lagos—where 10-hour rains caused severe flooding last Thursday—still grapple with the aftermath. NiMET warned that the persistent rains could worsen road damage, trigger waterborne diseases, and displace residents in high-risk zones.
