Our people are suffering because of estimated billing.
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has raised alarm over outrageous electricity billing, citing his residence’s bill which jumped from N2.7 million in March to N29 million in April.
Speaking on Monday at a roundtable in Victoria Island during the signing of an MoU between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Lagos State Government, Hamzat described the situation as “crazy billing”.
“I actually procured a meter… but to convert it is wahala,” he said, lamenting the DisCo’s refusal to activate a prepaid meter despite payment.
He also shared a case in Coker Aguda, where a man received a N2.8 million electricity bill despite paying N2 million annually in rent.
“Our people are suffering because of estimated billing,” Hamzat added.
Commissioner for Energy, Biodun Ogunleye, praised the partnership, calling it a new dawn for rural communities.
REA MD, Abba Aliyu, revealed plans to build an 8MW floating solar plant at the University of Lagos, pending state approval.
