Hundreds of international students in the U.S. are confronting abrupt visa cancellations and legal status terminations, causing widespread alarm on campuses. At least 901 students from 128 colleges—many from India and China—have been affected, with advocacy groups warning the actual number may be higher. Boston attorney Matthew Maiona noted the alarming trend: “We thought it was unusual at first. Now it’s coming fast and furious.”

Four Michigan students have filed lawsuits after their status was terminated without clear explanation, with similar cases emerging nationwide. Judges in several states have temporarily reinstated some students’ visas, but confusion persists as universities discover terminations in government databases before students are notified. With no official explanation from authorities, affected students—some nearing graduation—face agonizing decisions about whether to stay and appeal or leave voluntarily.
