“Every morning, they should go to the president and ask, ‘Can we wash your feet for saving us?’” Wike stated, emphasizing Tinubu’s role in de-escalating the crisis.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has disclosed that he advocated for the outright removal of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara before President Bola Tinubu’s intervention. Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Friday, Wike admitted dissatisfaction with the state of emergency declared in Rivers but acknowledged it saved Fubara from impeachment. Tinubu had suspended Fubara and appointed an administrator on March 18, 2025, amid escalating political tensions.

The FCT minister accused Governor Fubara’s aides of obstructing reconciliation efforts, even as he expressed willingness to engage in dialogue. Wike reiterated that Tinubu’s intervention averted a constitutional crisis, though he initially sought Fubara’s outright ouster.

“I wanted the outright removal of Governor Fubara. The president, by declaring a state of emergency, saved Fubara,” Wike said. He insisted Fubara’s position was already untenable, adding, “The governor was gone. He was gone, yes… so when people say the president did this, I say they should be praising him.”
