A man was confirmed dead after a three-storey building collapsed on Saturday at 10, Oremeta Street, Berger, Lagos.

An eyewitness told The Nation that a family of three was dining at a restaurant in the building before the incident. “The wife and their son had stepped out to get something, while the husband went to retrieve an item from his car parked within the compound. He was in the car when the building suddenly came down. He didn’t make it out,” the source said.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that two persons were rescued alive, while others—believed to include restaurant workers—remain trapped.

LASEMA officials also reported that several vehicles were buried under the rubble, and that rescue operations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, some hoodlums reportedly took advantage of the chaos, looting food items from the restaurant kitchen while posing as rescuers.

Authorities continue to search for survivors beneath the debris.
