PHILADELPHIA – A 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, Olatunji W. Bolaji, was killed in a brazen shooting early Wednesday morning in Philadelphia’s Center City district. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when Bolaji, a Norristown resident, picked up a 22-year-old passenger outside the Byblos Hookah Bar near Rittenhouse Square.

According to Philadelphia police, shortly after the pickup, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee – believed to have Massachusetts license plates – pulled up behind Bolaji’s SUV. Two men exited the vehicle, with one opening fire on both Bolaji and his passenger. Despite being shot in the head, the elderly driver managed to travel a short distance before crashing into a pole at 17th and Chestnut Streets.

Bolaji was pronounced dead at the scene, while his passenger sustained gunshot wounds to the arm, leg, and stomach and was rushed to Jefferson University Hospital in critical condition.

Authorities confirmed the shooting was captured on surveillance cameras but have not yet determined a motive. Investigators are exploring whether a physical altercation preceded the attack.

In a statement, Uber expressed devastation: “Our hearts break for the driver’s family and loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss. We’ve reached out to police to offer our support as they work to bring those responsible for this heinous act of violence to justice.”

A longtime family friend described Bolaji to NBC10 as “a kind man who was always ready to help others,” noting he was a dedicated worker and proud father whose son recently graduated college.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Bolaji’s family with funeral expenses and counseling costs during their mourning period. The Nigerian community in Philadelphia has expressed shock and grief over the tragic loss of the hardworking senior citizen.
