Boko Haram using TikTok to justify killings, spread ideology – Security expert

“Right now, when you go on TikTok, you will see Boko Haram members’ accounts. They host live programmes… They justify the group’s violence, which they do in the Hausa language,”

Security analyst Bulama Bukarti has raised the alarm over Boko Haram’s growing presence on social media, particularly TikTok. Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Sunday, Bukarti, a senior fellow at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, said the group is now using the platform to livestream and spread extremist propaganda.

“Right now, when you go on TikTok, you will see Boko Haram members’ accounts. They host live programmes… They justify the group’s violence, which they do in the Hausa language,” he said. “Even this week, there was a Boko Haram member who posted a 10-minute video on TikTok attacking me for speaking up.”

Bukarti further disclosed that the group has begun using unmanned drones to surveil military formations in the northeast, citing seven recent attacks on Nigerian military super camps. His warning follows Senator Ali Ndume’s statement that 100 soldiers and 280 civilians were killed in Borno over six months due to insurgent attacks.
