Head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, died from a cerebral stroke and subsequent heart failure, the Vatican has announced.

Pope Francis passed away at 7:35 AM on April 21, 2025, at his Vatican residence, the Holy See announced. Cardinal Kevin Farrell confirmed the pontiff succumbed to a cerebral stroke that triggered irreversible heart failure, ending his 12-year papacy. The 88-year-old had battled chronic lung disease and recently endured a 38-day hospitalization for pneumonia.

“His death certificate confirms the stroke led to coma and cardiac arrest,” the Vatican stated, noting he made his final public appearance during Easter Sunday blessings just hours before his passing.

Despite failing health, Pope Francis delivered his last public address to thousands in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday. The Jesuit pope, who lost part of his lung as a youth, faced recurring respiratory crises, with his February hospitalization marking the longest medical absence of his reign.
