Trump administration halts another $1 billion in NIH grants to Harvard

The Trump administration has frozen over 500 NIH grants worth $1 billion to Harvard University, citing the school’s failure to protect Jewish students from antisemitism.

According to senior HHS officials, the freeze targets non-clinical grants, including those for scientist training, and follows a prior $2.2 billion funding halt.

“Harvard needs to fully come into compliance with Title IV of the 1964 Civil Rights Act,” an HHS official said. The administration accused the university of ignoring demands for audits and adequate response to campus protests.

Harvard responded with a public letter and has since filed a lawsuit. “This is a pause of grant funding, not a termination,” another official added. The move is part of a broader federal effort targeting Ivy League schools allegedly failing to protect Jewish students under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
