Residents of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states have been undergoing hardship following cuts in power supply by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO)
Residents of Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states in northern Nigeria are grappling with severe power shortages, receiving only two to three hours of electricity daily over the past three days. This disruption has significantly impacted small-scale enterprises (SMEs) such as welding, tailoring, and ice production, leading to increased operational costs.
In Kano, water vendors have raised prices due to the unavailability of electricity to pump water from boreholes, with 25-liter containers now selling for N120, up from N70. Similarly, in Jigawa, businesses like welding have ceased operations, and water vendors are resorting to abandoned wells to meet demand.
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has attributed the outages to ongoing upgrades of critical distribution infrastructure and vegetation control on electricity feeders. The company has apologized for the inconvenience and assured that normal supply will resume upon completion of the necessary work.
