After consultations with the Council of State, the president “determined that a prima facie case has been established,” and a committee has been set up to look at the petitions, according to the statement from his office.
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo with immediate effect and ordered an investigation following three petitions filed against her, a statement from the presidency said.
After consultations with the Council of State, the president “determined that a prima facie case has been established,” and a committee has been formed to examine the petitions, according to the statement.
The nature of the allegations was not disclosed. The presidential office was not immediately available for comment.
Torkornoo, Ghana’s third female chief justice, was appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo and has served since June 2023. Earlier this year, she survived a removal petition which Akufo-Addo dismissed, saying it had “several deficiencies.”
