At least 26 people were killed and 17 others wounded after gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, the worst assault in years targeting civilians in the restive region that has seen an anti-India rebellion for more than three decades.

Gunmen opened fire on tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir’s town of Pahalgam on Tuesday, killing 26 and injuring 17 in the region’s deadliest civilian attack in years.

The picturesque Himalayan destination, known for its alpine meadows and pilgrimage routes, was thrown into chaos as police blamed rebels for the assault. No group has claimed responsibility.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the “heinous act” and vowed the attackers “will be brought to justice.” U.S. President Donald Trump and other world leaders joined in expressing outrage.

The incident raised fears about the future of Kashmir’s tourism industry, especially ahead of the Amarnath Yatra in July. Security forces continued searching for the perpetrators on Wednesday.

Home Minister Amit Shah visited the scene, while the nation reeled from renewed tensions in the conflict-prone region.
