Umar Damagum, acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described the defection of Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “very sad and unfortunate.”

Speaking Thursday during the presentation of a certificate of return to Ezenwafor Jude, PDP’s Anambra governorship candidate, Damagum said, “We least expected this action from them.”

He noted that the PDP had heavily supported both Oborevwori and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, who was the party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate.

“This election in 2027 is not about how many governors you have… It is about Tinubu and Nigerians,” Damagum said.

“The ordinary man is feeling the pain… It is APC versus Nigerians,” he added.

Damagum said defections will not define the 2027 elections, emphasizing the PDP’s resilience: “We’ve weathered more serious challenges and we’re still standing strong.”

Several PDP members are reportedly planning similar moves amid rising political tensions.
