Former Rep. George Santos has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison, marking the dramatic fall of a once-rising political figure.
In December 2022, weeks before taking office, the New York Republican was exposed for fabricating much of his biography. Five months into his term, federal prosecutors charged him with multiple offenses, including wire fraud, money laundering, and identity theft.
Additional charges soon followed, including allegations he used a supporter’s credit card for personal gain. Santos, ultimately expelled from Congress, initially denied wrongdoing but later pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
NBC News reported that U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert handed down the sentence Friday, noting the severity of Santos’ crimes.
“Right now, my expectation is I’m going to prison for 87 months. I’m totally resigned,” Santos told The New York Times.
Regarding a pardon, he said, “You bet your sweet a– I would.”
