The FBI says sextortion scams have caused more than 20 minor suicides and nearly $65 million in losses over two years
The FBI has launched “Operation Artemis” to combat the rising threat of sextortion scams, sending agents to Nigeria after 22 Nigerians were arrested, half linked to cases where teenage victims died by suicide.
Sextortion scams often begin on social media, with perpetrators posing as young women to lure teenage boys into sending explicit images, later used for blackmail.
The FBI stated Thursday it has observed “a significant increase over the last three years in financially motivated sextortion schemes targeting young males ages 14–17,” with more than 20 minors dying by suicide.
According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, extortion-related tips rose by 30% last year, with financial losses nearing $65 million over two years.
“These subjects will now be held accountable in the American justice system, with more subjects still awaiting extraditions in Nigeria,” the FBI said.
