The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has warned of Boko Haram and Islamic State fighters regrouping in the Tumbus areas of Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills within Sambisa Forest.
Speaking in Maiduguri on Friday when Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa, and other top commanders visited, Zulum lamented a setback in military operations.
“What we are facing now is, we do military operations, and after some time, we disengage. Boko Haram and ISWAP members again take over,” he said.
He stressed that insurgents thrive in the Lake Chad waterways without sustained military presence.
Zulum called for increased manpower, better equipment including MRAPs, fighter helicopters, and anti-drone technology.
“The last attack in Wulgo was supported by armed drones,” he revealed.
He urged continuous military engagement and a focus on non-kinetic solutions, citing the reintegration of over 300,000 repentant insurgents.
Defence Minister Badaru assured enhanced military support to Borno and the Northeast.
