“And no fuel in the generator attached to the theatre at the hospital. Minutes later, they brought fuel and poured it into the generator. But it refused to start.”

Shehu Danjuma Umar, a Niger State resident, is grieving the death of his wife, Ummi Yusuf Maksudi, following a botched fibroid surgery at Jummai Babangida Aliyu General Hospital in Minna. The procedure, conducted on Thursday, was disrupted by a power outage, and the hospital’s backup generator failed. Umar recounted on Facebook: “Thirty minutes into my wife’s operation, NEPA interrupted the light… no fuel in the generator… Minutes later, they brought fuel, but it refused to start.”

As medical staff struggled to restore electricity, Maksudi lay helpless in the theatre. Umar said: “An operation that was not supposed to last for 90 minutes had taken hours.” Power was eventually restored, but the prolonged delay proved fatal. The widower expressed devastation, stating: “A sight at my wife was a very devastating experience.”

Umar, though heartbroken, said his account was “just to save lives and avoid future occurrences.”Friends mourned Maksudi as a respectful and humble woman. The deceased will be buried Sunday in Minna. Umar declined further comment, saying: “I had reported my case to Almighty Allah already.”
