“Even when we were campaigning, I realised our people were not interested in having another northerner come into power.”
Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa conceded that his 2023 vice-presidential candidacy under the PDP may have disregarded Delta’s preference for a southern presidency. Speaking on Arise News, Okowa acknowledged the political fallout, stating, “I realised our people were not interested in another northerner in power… I should have gone with the will of my people.” Despite the PDP’s presidential loss in Delta, he highlighted the party’s governorship victory as proof of enduring support, with wins in 21 of 25 LGAs. Okowa also dismissed EFCC probe rumours, asserting, “Petitions can be written by anybody… there are no fears.”
Okowa defended his administration’s strides in infrastructure and healthcare while praising his successor’s progress. Addressing speculation about EFCC investigations, he clarified, “I’ve never been arrested… invitations are normal.” He admitted his VP candidacy clashed with southern presidency demands but stood by the PDP’s decision. “The party had taken a position… I was nominated,” he said, urging focus on Delta’s development.
