“Contrarily, Akpabio was a victim of the fraudulent manipulation of the election of Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District held on Feb. 23, 2019,” the statement read.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed any association with jailed Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officer, Prof. Peter Ogban, stating that he was never involved in election fraud during the 2019 polls.
In a statement on Wednesday by his media aide, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio described claims linking him to Ogban’s conviction as “unfounded, spurious, malicious and intended to tarnish” his reputation.
“Contrarily, Akpabio was a victim of the fraudulent manipulation of the election of Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District held on Feb. 23, 2019,” the statement read.
Ogban, a returning officer, was convicted for tampering with results in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Akpabio, then the APC candidate, lost that election.
“He is vindicated that the perpetrators of the electoral fraud are being brought to justice… In due time, we believe all the conspirators will be brought to justice as Ogban, either through the judiciary or divine intervention,” Ekong added.
