Vatican faces dilemma as African cardinal’s unknown age threatens conclave role

There is confusion over whether Cardinal Philippe Ouédraogo was born on January 24 1945, which would make him 80 years old, or on December 31 of that year, which would make him 79.

Confusion over Cardinal Philippe Ouédraogo’s birth year could exclude the Burkina Faso prelate from this week’s papal conclave. Vatican records conflict, listing his birth as both January 24, 1945 (making him ineligible at 80) and December 31, 1945 (qualifying him at 79). The conservative cardinal’s participation is crucial for traditionalists seeking to counter Pope Francis’ reforms, including LGBTQ+ blessings. “In my village, there were neither hospitals nor schools. I was born at home and was not given a birthdate,” Ouédraogo explained regarding the discrepancy.

Italian media have mocked the situation, with one paper joking the cardinal “found the secret to stopping time.” Canon lawyers warn his participation could invalidate the election if his true age exceeds 80. The Vatican has yet to clarify which date it will recognize as the conclave begins Wednesday.
