Paris FC returns to Ligue 1 after 46 years

Paris FC secured promotion to Ligue 1 after a 1-1 draw against Martigues on Friday, ending a 46-year absence from the French top flight.

The result guarantees a top-two finish in Ligue 2, joining league leaders Lorient in promotion.

For the first time in 35 years, two clubs from Paris—Paris FC and champions Paris St Germain—will compete in Ligue 1 in the same season.

Recently acquired by the family of French billionaire Bernard Arnault, Paris FC aims “to be among the elite of French and European football.” The club also plans to relocate from Charlety Stadium to Stade Jean-Bouin, near PSG’s Parc des Princes.

This marks the first time since 1990, when Racing Paris 1 were relegated, that two Paris clubs will feature in the top division.
