Despite a reported N700 billion revenue increase in Nigeria’s power sector in 2024, consumers continue to grapple with exploitative billing, unlawful disconnections, and unmet metering promises. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) revealed that DisCos received over 203,116 complaints in just six months in 2020, a figure believed to have risen significantly. Residents in Ado-Odo Ota, Ogun State, lament poor service delivery despite donating over 200 transformers to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
Prince Olatunji Onaolapo, Chairman of Ado-Odo Ota CDC, expressed residents’ frustrations, stating, “Discussions around electricity issues dominate our meetings.” Despite community efforts, IBEDC’s response remains inadequate. Mr. Abel Ukpebor, a resident, recounted his two-year unresolved meter complaint, saying, “They promised to fix it, but I’m still waiting.” Such delays have left consumers considering alternatives.
Consumers like Ukpebor face prolonged unresolved issues, with new meters failing upon installation. “It never worked for a second,” he said, highlighting DisCos’ inefficiency. With public discontent growing, stakeholders urge urgent reforms to align revenue gains with improved service delivery.
