“It is expected that as our students are going abroad to study, foreigners should also be coming to Nigeria to study.” — Osodeke
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has backed the Federal Government’s decision to scrap foreign scholarship schemes for Nigerian students.
ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, said the move was long overdue and aligns with the union’s position on promoting balanced academic exchange.
“ASUU is in full support of the scrapping of the foreign scholarship scheme by the Federal Government,” Osodeke stated.
He emphasized that academic exchange should be mutual, not one-sided. “It is expected that as our students are going abroad to study, foreigners should also be coming to Nigeria to study. That is what bilateral relations is all about—you give me this and I give you that.”
He criticised the old arrangement, calling it “unheard of” that Nigerians continually seek education abroad while foreign students rarely come to Nigerian institutions.
The ASUU leader stressed the need to invest in local universities to enhance capacity and attract international students.
