“This is a major shift in government policy. It puts Nigeria—not foreign companies, not imports—at the heart of our national development,” Idris said.
The federal government has introduced the Renewed Hope Nigeria First Initiative, mandating all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prioritise locally made goods and services in public procurement. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the policy after the Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
“This is a major shift in government policy. It puts Nigeria—not foreign companies, not imports—at the heart of our national development,” Idris said.
The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has been directed to revise procurement guidelines, enforce a Local Content Compliance Framework, and maintain a database of Nigerian producers. All procurement officers in MDAs will be reassigned to the BPP for better oversight.
“No procurement of foreign goods or services already available locally shall proceed without justification and a written waiver from the BPP,” he warned. The policy will be backed by an executive order and breaches will attract sanctions.
