Nubbin device: A cutting-edge technology or a clever fiction?

In simpler terms, it allows users to relive old memories, movies, dreams, and potentially escape reality.

The internet has been buzzing with the new technology called “nubbin”. The social media users have gone agog with curiosity trying to determine if the device is real or just an elaborate hoax. Despite countless videos showing how the device supposedly works, many are still left wondering: What exactly is Nubbin? And more importantly, is it genuine?

It maintains a TikTok account boasting over 17,000 followers, featuring various celebrities and influencers promoting its content through sponsored posts. Its official-looking website advertises Nubbin with promises to “revisit nearly forgotten memories,” “star in classic movies,” and “explore endless galaxies,” making it appear like a legitimate piece of cutting-edge technology.

The Nubbin device is a fictional technology created as a marketing strategy by TCKR, a fictional company, to promote the upcoming season of the movie series “Black mirror”. Nubbin features prominently in Black Mirror Season 7, in episodes such as Hotel Reverie, Eulogy, and USS Callister: Into Infinity. However, the concept was first introduced way back in Season 3, released in 2016.

It is a small device that is attached to the temple allowing the user to go into virtual consciousness. In simpler terms, it allows users to relive old memories, movies, dreams, and potentially escape reality. In the videos that have been circulating online, users press the button on their Nubbin, which is positioned on their temple, before their eyes turn white and they seemingly end up in another world, oblivious to where they are in real life.

In reality, however, Nubbin does not exist — at least, not yet. No verified technology currently allows humans to enter full virtual consciousness. The closest real-world technology to this is Elon Musk’s Neuralink. It is implanted into the human brain by a surgical robot, allowing people to connect to computers with their minds. It claims to be able to speed up the rate at which the human mind can learn and memorize information.

Until technology catches up with imagination, Nubbin is a glimpse into what might someday be possible — but for now, it’s just a very clever fiction created to promote the upcoming season of “Black Mirror.”
