‘We cannot fold our arms and see things go bad in our great party’

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed speculation about leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), reaffirming his commitment to the opposition. During a meeting with PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) women members, led by ex-Minister Hajia Inna Ciroma, Atiku emphasized the need for a broad coalition to challenge the APC in 2027. “The coalition movement is not just a political strategy but a necessity to rebuild the country,” he stated, citing the historic NPN-NPP alliance as a model.

The PDP women leaders expressed concerns over the party’s leadership crisis, urging Atiku to help prevent its collapse. Ciroma said, “We cannot fold our arms and watch our great party crumble.” Atiku assured them of ongoing efforts to unite opposition forces nationwide, describing the movement as “powered by Nigerians desirous of reclaiming their country.”

The meeting highlights deepening divisions within the PDP as key figures explore alliances ahead of 2027. Atiku’s stance signals his continued influence in opposition politics despite internal party turmoil.
