“Insecurity has become a pervasive problem,” — Sen. Jimoh

In response to rising insecurity nationwide, the Nigerian Senate has resolved to convene a two-day National Security Summit in Abuja. The summit will gather representatives from federal, state, and local governments, alongside traditional institutions, to propose actionable strategies against widespread violence.

The decision followed a motion titled “Urgent Need for a National Security Summit,” sponsored by Senator Ibrahim Jimoh (Ondo South) and co-sponsored by Senators Zam Titus, Peter Onyeka Nwebonyl, and Ngwu Osita.

“Insecurity has become a pervasive problem,” Senator Jimoh stated, citing banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping in both urban and rural areas. He linked global crises, including the Russia-Ukraine war and economic tensions, to worsening local conditions.

Referencing Nigeria’s history of political unrest, Jimoh stressed the need for “alternative approaches to military engagements” and called for support for President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The summit aims to review security policies and generate recommendations to guide future government reforms.
