Luigi Mangione’s defense fund surpassed $1 million on Tuesday, the same day the accused killer turned 27 behind bars. The milestone comes as Mangione faces the death penalty for the alleged December 4, 2024 assassination of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.
Since his arrest on December 9 from a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, more than 28,000 supporters have donated through a GiveSendGo campaign, with many contributing $27 in honor of his birthday.
“Even in a worsening economy, everyday people facing financial hardships of their own continue to provide monetary support for Mr. Mangione,” his legal team said.
Mangione pleaded not guilty to murder and stalking charges in April. His next state hearing is set for June 26, with a federal trial to be scheduled on December 5.
Prosecutors confirmed plans to pursue the death penalty. Outside court, supporters rallied with signs, while a lone counter-protester displayed a faux electric chair.
Mangione remains in custody at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center.
