Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Thursday distanced himself from the violence that followed the #EndSARS protests in October 2020. In a video played before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court, Abuja, Kanu said, “The mayhem witnessed during the period could not have been as a result of my broadcast.”

He insisted IPOB is “a peaceful and a non-violent movement,” adding that he established the Eastern Security Network (ESN) to protect southeastern communities suffering attacks. “If our people cannot go to farm… do you sit down and do nothing?” he asked.

DSS witness “BBB” testified that Kanu’s Radio Biafra broadcasts incited attacks, citing killings of Ahmed Gulak and others, and destruction of public assets. Kanu denied control over IPOB’s day-to-day activities, noting he would have declared Biafra if he had full authority.

The defence team sought adjournment to cross-examine the witness. The court adjourned to May 14, 21, and 22 for further hearing.
