Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has congratulated Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost on his election as Pope Leo XIV.
In a statement posted on his official X account, Obi described the new pope’s emergence as “a profound blessing” and praised his moral clarity and spiritual leadership.
“I wholeheartedly congratulate His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV… His emergence… reaffirms the enduring presence of divine guidance,” Obi stated. He also commended the College of Cardinals for their unity and prayerful discernment, calling their decision a reflection of “spiritual depth” and faithfulness to Church traditions.
Obi lauded the pope’s inaugural address, describing it as “reassuring and inspiring,” with a call to justice, peace, and care for the vulnerable.
Expressing confidence in the pope’s experience as a missionary and canon lawyer, Obi prayed for his leadership. “May God bless and guide Pope Leo XIV…,” he concluded, urging spiritual renewal and global solidarity under the new papacy.
