Referee overrules VAR in rare incident, Premier League gives reason

“Isn’t it great we have someone who is willing to go to the screen and stick with his decision? We want referees to go by their own decision, and from what I’ve seen the correct decision.”

The Premier League has clarified referee Darren England’s decision to deny Fulham a penalty during their 3-1 loss to Everton, despite a VAR review. The hosts appealed for a handball by Vitalii Mykolenko, but the official upheld his original call after consulting the video assistant. A league statement explained: “The referee’s call of no penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with no conclusive evidence that Mykolenko handled the ball.”

Former England goalkeeper Robert Green supported the decision, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: “In the VAR booth, there’s no evidence to say it’s off the hand. It’s not conclusive.” Green also praised Bournemouth’s set-piece execution in another match, calling Evanilson’s finish “the stuff of dreams.”
