Pope Leo XIV on Saturday outlined the vision for his papacy, highlighting artificial intelligence as a major challenge to humanity and reaffirming his commitment to the core reforms of Pope Francis.
“In our own day, the church offers everyone the treasury of its social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor,” he said.
In his first public outing, Leo visited the Madre del Buon Consiglio sanctuary in Genazzano—linked to his Augustinian order and his namesake, Pope Leo XIII.
Leo, the first American pope, cited Francis’ “The Joy of the Gospel” as a guiding vision and emphasized inclusivity and care for the marginalized.
The Vatican revealed that Leo will retain his previous bishopric motto and coat of arms and that he wears a cross containing relics of St. Augustine and St. Monica.
He was elected pope Thursday, winning over 100 votes in the conclave’s fourth ballot.
