Major diamond mining company in Sierra Leone shuts down, cuts 1,000+ jobs

Koidu Limited, the largest diamond producer in Sierra Leone, has ceased operations and laid off more than 1,000 workers amid an unresolved dispute over pay and poor working conditions.

The company, a subsidiary of Octea Limited, faced two worker strikes between December 2024 and March 2025. Union leader Charles Kainessie said most staff were dismissed, citing salary devaluation and poor facilities.

The Labour Ministry confirmed receipt of dismissal letters. Koidu declined to comment, with a spokesperson saying he was “restricted from making any comments.”

First Lady Fatima Bio criticized the company during a visit, calling its actions “unjust.” Koidu responded by accusing her of defamation and incitement. The firm claims it lost $16 million during the strike and requires $20 million to restart.

Information Minister Chernor Bah said efforts are underway to resolve the crisis, which could impact global diamond supplies already strained by other producers.
