“Protesters in London demand ex-NNPC chief face trial in Nigeria over alleged multi-billion-dollar graft.”
Hundreds of Nigerians under the banner of Rescue Nigeria Now (RNN) protested at the Nigerian High Commission and UK Home Office in London on Monday, demanding the deportation of former NNPC boss Mele Kyari to face corruption charges. Demonstrators carried placards reading “Mele Kyari, go home and face EFCC now!” and “London is not for public officials who abused public trust,” alleging he fled Nigeria to evade accountability for financial misconduct during his 2019–2025 tenure.
In their petition, RNN accused Kyari of misappropriating billions meant for refinery rehabilitation in Warri, Kaduna, and Port Harcourt, stating funds “vanished into a bureaucratic abyss.” The group also claimed Kyari transferred illicit funds to UK accounts, urging authorities to investigate. “We see this as an affront to Nigeria’s anti-corruption crusade,” their letter read.
The UK Home Office has yet to respond. The protest highlights growing frustration among Nigerians over alleged corruption and impunity among public officials, with calls for international cooperation to repatriate accused individuals.
