The since-deleted tweet, made from an account with only 37 followers, was deemed a national security threat by Saudi authorities.
A British senior analyst at Bank of America has been sentenced to 10 years in a Saudi Arabian prison over a single tweet from 2018, reports The Times of London.
Ahmed al-Doush, 41, a Sudanese-born father of four, was arrested last August in Riyadh.
The since-deleted tweet, made from an account with only 37 followers, was deemed a national security threat by Saudi authorities.
“He missed the birth of our fourth child and our ten-year wedding anniversary,” his wife, Nour al-Doush, said.
Held in solitary confinement for 33 days, al-Doush has reportedly faced prolonged detention without charge, secret hearings, and denial of legal representation.
UK-based lawyer Haydee Dijkstal stated, “The fact that it is still unclear what tweet forms the basis of the charge… further demonstrates the fair trial violations.”
Saudi Arabia’s special criminal court handled the case. The UK Foreign Office says it is supporting the family, but advocates argue government action has been insufficient.
