“We don’t run away from our problems. When you run away, you are a coward, and that’s a real cowardly act.”
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has criticised white South Africans who recently relocated to the United States, describing them as “cowards.”
Speaking on Tuesday, Ramaphosa reacted to the group of 59 white citizens granted refugee status by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed they were fleeing racial discrimination in South Africa.
“They’ll be back soon,” Ramaphosa said, accusing them of abandoning the country during critical times. “We don’t run away from our problems. When you run away, you are a coward, and that’s a real cowardly act.”
The president said his administration remains committed to addressing the inequities of apartheid and building an inclusive nation. He emphasised that the exodus was a reaction from those uncomfortable with reforms aimed at correcting historical injustices.
Trump and South Africa-born billionaire Elon Musk have recently alleged that white farmers are victims of genocide, an accusation the South African government has consistently denied.
Ramaphosa called on all citizens to work collectively to address national challenges rather than fleeing.
