Many residents in Kano are grappling with the rising cost of deodorants amid a scorching heatwave that has seen temperatures exceed 40°C.
With demand for antiperspirants surging, prices have nearly tripled, forcing many to seek cheaper alternatives like lemon and homemade remedies.
Halima Musa, a postgraduate student, said: “Before now, a roll-on deodorant cost around N500, but now it is about N1,900 and above.”
Ahmed Bello, a 24-year-old student, added: “I have to ration it or risk smelling bad in public. It is very embarrassing and affects my confidence.”
However, some residents disagree. Musa Dorayi stated: “It is not a must that one must buy a deodorant… I can simply take a shower and go out.”
Traders at Sabon Gari market blamed the hike on forex challenges and rising import costs. “The cost of importing these products has increased now due to forex issues,” said wholesaler Ibrahim Sani.
Retailers report increased complaints, with many popular brands now out of stock.
