The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has successfully performed its first living-donor kidney transplant on a 69-year-old patient with end-stage renal disease.

The procedure, conducted on 6 May, involved a kidney donated by the patient’s 39-year-old relative.

According to a statement by the hospital on Friday, the surgery was carried out by a team led by Ernest Aniede, including in-house surgeons, nephrologists, and other professionals.

During a ward visit, the Medical Director, Saad Ahmed, praised the patient and donor for their trust and commended the team. “This is a major milestone for FMC Abuja and a positive sign for the healthcare landscape in Nigeria,” he said.

Mr Ahmed acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s support for healthcare reforms, citing improved access to dialysis and increased training and funding for kidney care.

Both donor and recipient are fully recovered and awaiting discharge. The hospital said this success reflects its commitment to world-class, life-saving care using advanced medical technology.
