The Trump administration has agreed to pay nearly $5 million to the family of Ashli Babbitt, the woman fatally shot by a police officer during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, The Washington Post reported Monday.
Babbitt, 35, was shot while attempting to climb through a broken window near the House Speaker’s lobby during the attack by Trump supporters trying to overturn the 2020 election results.
Her estate filed a $30 million wrongful death lawsuit last year. Though the case was set for trial, the Justice Department reversed course after Trump’s November 2024 election victory and entered settlement talks.
According to The Post, citing sources familiar with the matter, a deal was reached to pay nearly $5 million.
The officer who shot Babbitt was cleared, but Trump has called her an “innocent” woman. Judicial Watch represented Babbitt’s estate in the suit.
